Frequently Asked Questions
Will I get paid to host a SPAN XFRA node?
XFRA hosts are expected to receive a predictable monthly value that may include bundled services, discounted electricity, high-speed internet, home energy benefits, and host compensation.
The exact compensation will depend on the community, program structure, and final agreement. SPAN has not yet published a fixed payment amount, so we do not promise a specific monthly income.
Do I need a SPAN Panel to participate?
Yes. A SPAN Panel is required for an XFRA installation.
The SPAN Panel manages and optimizes the home’s electrical loads, helping identify available power capacity while maintaining control of the home’s energy use. XFRA is designed to be installed together with a SPAN Panel and battery system.
Do I need solar and batteries?
Solar is highly recommended and a battery is required for XFRA. The battery also helps provide backup power and resilience for the home.
The XFRA configuration includes a SPAN Panel, whole-home battery backup, and the XFRA compute node. Solar may be included depending on the home, utility, and program design, but it is not identified as a universal requirement.
Is my data or home network exposed?
XFRA is designed with security and separation between the compute system and your home environment. The node operates as part of SPAN’s secure orchestration system, while SPAN states that communication with its panel and cloud services is encrypted using industry-standard security protocols. However, no connected technology should be described as completely risk-free.
Before participating, homeowners should review the final program agreement, privacy terms, network requirements, and security details.
What if I change my mind before 2027?
XFRA is currently in an early proof-of-concept phase, and broader availability is planned for 2027. Program availability, eligibility, pricing, installation, cancellation, and removal terms may vary and are still being finalized.
can help evaluate whether your home is a potential fit, but participation is subject to SPAN’s availability, program rules, and final approval.
